Rabbi YY Jacobson on Recognition of G-d: Focus on Naaman

In this amazing lecture, Rabbi YY Jacobson delves into four levels of recognizing G-d’s supremacy and unity. These were introduced by four key people in the Hebrew Bible:

  • Yisro (Jethro): Exodus 18:11
  • Rachav (Rahab): Joshua 2:11
  • Naaman: II Kings 5:15
  • Moshe (Moses): Deuteronomy 4:39

A main part of this lecture focuses on Naaman, a great general of Aram in the time of Elisha. When his skin affliction of tzara’as (Lev. 13) was cured miraculously, he rejected idolatry and became a righteous Gentile (Noahide).

Note: The blemish of tzara’as on a person affected only the skin. It is often mistranslated as “leprosy,” but that is completely unrelated.

The Syrian general Naaman is cured of his skin disorder by following the instruction of the prophet Elisha to immerse in the Jordan River. See 2 Kings 5. (Image of copperplate engraving by Carl Schuler, published c. 1850.)
