Moment of Silence: Thoughts of school children from 1 minute of reflection

Moment of Silence book of letters

Compiled by Avraham Frank, Director of the official Moment of Silence web site: https://momentofsilence.info

Do the schools in your area observe a Moment of Silence (MOS) at the start of the day? If they don’t, they definitely should! MOS helps students immensely by reducing their stress, increasing their calm and focus, and improving their interpersonal relationships. That is proven not by government studies, but by hundreds of letters from students about their positive experiences with MOS. The letters in this book, from students in all the age groups, reveal their personal challenges, triumphs and wishes.

How does the program work? Every morning, the office simply announces the Moment of Silence and invites students to take a minute for quiet reflection. This innovative program is free and requires a minimum of teacher training, which is a big bonus for administrators. Very importantly, parents participate by discussing it with their children, and exploring what they might think about during this time.

After putting the program in place, principals report that their schools are calmer and more successful as a result. Not surprisingly, the students’ grades improve, and altercations and absenteeism decline. In fact, the students look forward to the precious minute of quiet. They come to realize that they grow personally from reflecting on the needful conditions of people and things beyond themselves.
