Rambam (Maimonides), his Mishneh Torah & his other writings

Maimonides (Rambam)

1. “Rambam” is the acronym for Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, also known as Maimonides. He was born on the Eve of Passover, 14 Nissan, 4895 (11’35 C.E.). He passed away in Egypt on the 20th of Tevet, which usually falls in January. The year 20’26 CE is the 891st year since the birth of Rambam. In this lesson, Rabbi Yosef Eisen explains that Rambam is one of the important figures in the history of Torah scholarship.

Rabbi Eisen reads from his book Miraculous Journey: A complete history of the Jewish people from Creation to the present.

2. In this lesson, Rabbi Yosef Eisen presents a review of the classic writings by Rambam. These include Mishneh Torah, The Guide of the Perplexed (Moreh Nevuchim), The Book of the Commandments (Sefer HaMitzvot), and more. Rambam’s Introduction to his Commentary on the Mishnah is a good resource for Noahides to learn the history of the Oral Torah.

3. In this short audio lesson, Rabbi Nachman Simon speaks about the first Torah law in Rambam’s Mishneh Torah. Significantly, Rambam called it “the foundation of all foundations” and “the pillar of wisdom”.
