Divine Providence in the Miracles of Purim

Festival of Purim
Reading the Book of Esther and giving charity for the poor on Purim.

1. What was the miracle of Purim?

NEW! 2. The episode of Queen Vashti

3. Mordechai “the linguist”

In this lesson, Rabbi Nachman Simon explains that the Purim miracle happened through many instances of hidden Divine Providence. For example, Mordechai was one of the Sages of the Jewish Supreme Sanhedrin during their exile in Persia. In the Megillah (the Book of Esther), it relates that he overheard a plot to assassinate King Achashveros. In fact, the conspirators were speaking in their rare foreign language of Tarshish. Mordechai understood them, because the Sanhedrin Sages were required to be fluent in all the 70 languages of Biblical times.

4. Haman’s lottery backfired on him!

NEW! 5. The miracle of Esther’s 3-day fast before approaching the king (Esther 4:15-5:3)

Note: Contrary to some mistaken beliefs, Psalm 22 is King David’s prophetic vision of the intense prayer by Queen Esther as she passed by the threatening palace guards, on her way to enter uninvited into the throne room of King Achashverosh, on the third day of her three-day fast (which fell on the first day of Passover that year). That is why Psalm 22 is considered to be the Psalm of the Day for Purim.

6. The sequel to the Book of Esther
